Useful plant parts: The roots

Description: Greater burdock is a plant that can brow up to one and a half meter in height. This plant has relatively juicy and branched roots that can grow more than half a meter in length. The stalk is also branched, covered with hair and usually has a reddish color. The relatively large leaves of this plant are also covered with hair. The flowers are usually red or purple colored.

   

Collecting period and locations: The roots of greater burdock are usually collected during autumm. First, one needs to remove all the soil from the roots. Then the roots are cut longitudinally on a few places and are then dried on a airy and shady place. As for the locations, this plant can commonly be found along paths, fences, riversides and on similar locations.

Medicinal properties and applications: The roots of this plant are mostly used for treating dandruff, mostly in form of oil extracts of the dried roots of burdock (the extracts are usually made by using olive or sesame oil). It is also known that greater burdock acts as a diuretic, and because of that, it is commonly a part of tea mixtures used for blood cleansing.

   

Active compounds: Essential oils, tannins, sitosterols, various compounds with antibiotic and fungicital properties.

Recipe: Two full teaspoons of dried burdock roots are added to a quarter liter of cold water. This is then left for about six hours. After that, the mixture is heated until it boils. Afterwards, the tea is strained and is ready to be used.
